(Having just celebrated Mother’s Day and Father’s Day…)

I’m covering a topic that is difficult for most to approach…honoring those that you may feel don’t deserve honor. Let’s face it, not all parents, by most standards, are entitled to be held in high esteem.

They have made some major mistakes, and some are still making them.

The Bible says to honor your father and mother “only when they do or act like you think they should do and act”. Is that what it says? No! It says to honor them (no stipulations). This may be extremely difficult for some. They may say, “but you don’t understand, you don’t know what my parents have done”. This may be true, but you are still to give honor to them. Not because they “deserve” it, but because it is right. Giving them honor doesn’t excuse their behavior.

Here are some things that should help you in this…

1. Don’t return evil for evil. Be kind.

2. Forgive (let go of your anger and animosity)

3. Try to understand the surrounding circumstances. You don’t condone but look at the whole picture. (Practice being compassionate)

4. Pray for your mom and dad (praying for someone can transform your thoughts about them).

5. If you feel you must keep your distance, still show concern. (Stay in touch from a distance, but stay in touch)

6. Seek Gods guidance, not just listening to those that may or may not be desiring peace in your life. (Become a prayer warrior for your parents and want good for them)

As you continue with your life, remember this…Mistakes have been made. Bad choices have been identified. Forgiveness has been implemented. A new life has begun. The mistakes have their lessons, but do not allow them to take up residence in your life. Respect for the position of a father and mother is vital to a full and compassionate life.

First and foremost, though, God is faithful to give you the grace and love needed to be a force for Him in all things, including family.

Deuteronomy 5:16 NLT

[16] "Honor your father and mother, as the LORD your God commanded you. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you. #helpforyourdailywalk #paulaandthebible
