I love making friends! But more than that, I love keeping them.
I haven’t arrived just yet, but I’m learning how this keeping friend works.
I have to ask myself when it “seems” as though friends (new or old) are hard to find…how well am I listening to what they have to say? Are they frustrated in my presence? Am I ALWAYS, right? Am I giving off some kind of “vibe” that makes them feel as though I don’t care about what they have to say? Do they sense my genuineness when I say I care about them? Am I interrupting, or listening? When I don’t agree with my friend, does our conversation end in an argument?
Dale Carnegie says it well, "If you argue and rankle and contradict, you may achieve a victory sometimes; but it will be an empty victory because you will never get your opponent's good will."
Your friends should never become your opponents. Goodwill with friends is a worthy goal.
So, as I continue in my friend journey, May I set my focus on becoming the best listener possible.
James 1:19 NLT
