Really Listen

It is amazing the things you can learn when you really listen to what’s being said.
When someone is talking to you or you are hearing a speech or sermon, what is going through your mind at that very moment? Are you truly engaged with them or is you mind somewhere else? Perhaps you are figuring out your “comeback”. Maybe you are thinking in the middle of the sermon that this speaker has it all wrong…and you turn him off instead of listening to his point. Or you may quite possibly be thinking about where you are gonna eat when he gets finished.
Tuning out the world and becoming fully involved in the conversation at the present is a learned process. Sometimes you have to verbally tell your mind to pay attention.
We have some great wisdom in Proverbs about paying attention to the scripture. We are to “listen” “remember” “let the words go deep in your heart”. Why? They bring life to us. They bring healing to our entire body. Then, most importantly, we are to guard the affections of our heart (your innermost being) because they affect all that you are. Your thoughts are the source of true life.
Proverbs 4:20-23 NLT
[20] My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. [21] Don't lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, [22] for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. [23] Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
