Paying Attention

We just came out of the Christmas season with many still taking down decorations and putting their house back in order. Believe you me, it has happened in the Maupin Cottage.

I want to encourage you not to put away the story of Jesus. I say this because it is more than a story or a song that you hear during the holidays. If you are not “listening” to what Jesus is trying to say to you from the Bible, you are missing out on the things He came here to freely give you. But you have to listen to Him.

I remember that phrase we used to see a lot on T-shirts, “Got Milk?” We need one that says, “Got Ears?” The scripture today basically asks that question, and goes on to say, “listen and pay attention”.

That Bing Crosby Christmas song still rings in my ears, “Do You Hear What I Hear”. “Do you have ears?” The idea in the is song was wanting everyone to realize something very special had happened. The phrase that sticks out to me, and was the most important in the song was “this child that was born would bring us goodness and light.”

I knew this way before hearing a Bing Crosby song though. I listened to those I trusted tell me all about Jesus and from reading the scriptures in the Bible for myself. I realized that His story didn’t end with Him in the manger. I knew by “listening” to what was being said to me in devotions and sermons and most importantly the Spirit speaking to me through the Bible, that God has a plan for me.

What does God want for you? Listen to Him as you read the Bible…give Him your full attention. He has something to say.

Mark 4:23-24 GW

[23] Let the person who has ears listen!" [24] He went on to say, "Pay attention to what you're listening to! Knowledge will be measured out to you by the measure of attention you give. This is the way knowledge increases.
