Oh, Be Careful Little Tongue

Most all of us sang the song, “Oh Be Careful, Little Eyes” as a child. It went through the litany of things to be careful with every day.
“Oh, be careful little…eyes what you see; ears what you hear; tongue what you say; hands what you do; feet where you go; heart whom you trust and mind what you think” …
I can remember thinking, as a child, when I sung this, a sense of fear that I better toe the line. I didn’t understand as a kid that the song was meant to help me, not condemn me.
The words that needed to be emphasized was what followed each of those verses was “the Father up above is looking down in love!” He wasn’t wanting to bop me on the head and tell me to straighten up. He wanted good for me. He really and truly loved me.
He was wanting to express His Love to me, to encourage me and to help me see how what I see, hear, say, trust and think is important to my life.
The one that stands out to me is what I say.
Imagine really learning that as a child…
Imagine learning that what you say can make your life not so good or better…Learning to never say anything hurtful or lie about a person or situation…really taking it all to heart could have such an impact on my young life.
As an adult Christian, I have had to learn “the hard way” about the consequences of seeing, saying and doing those things that harm me. I should have learned them early on in my life and really took them to heart. I should’ve realized how much God wanted good for me because of His Great Love for me. He never wanted harm, only good.
