Look Around You

When you observe what happens in the Spring, you are reminded of new life. You look at the trees coming back to life … once barren (and looking dead) now having new life with beautiful leaves. The flower seeds you planted are beginning to burst forth from the ground.
Today’s scripture is a reminder to us of where life comes from. Jesus came to Mary and Martha after their brother, Lazarus, was already dead and buried. Jesus even shed tears over what had taken place.
His reminder to Martha was simply that He was the “resurrection and the life”. He told her “Anyone who believes in me will live” even after dying. He needed that to be nailed down in Martha’s heart. She assured him that she had always believed.
Now when the instructions came to roll the stone from the entrance of Lazarus grave, there was some pushback from Martha because he had been dead for four days and normally would’ve had an awful smell. So another reminder, “Didn’t I say that you will see the glory of God if you believe?”
Jesus looked to heaven and prayed then called, “Lazarus come out!” Even though Mary and Martha’s brother had been dead, he was now walking out of that grave.
Walk outside and look around you. What do you see? I see new life all around. My Japanese Maple by my kitchen window has looked dead all winter but has come alive with beautiful new leaves. Jesus wants you to believe in Him. He wants to bring new life to you. The kind that never dies.
