Do you remember the story in the Bible where Samuel was sent to find the next king?
He was told to go to to a man named Jesse, and he would find the next leader there. With each of Jesse’s boys he was introduced to, Samuel would think by their appearance, surely this was the next king. But the things he was seeing and what God was looking for, were two different things. God doesn’t look at folks in the same way we do. He looks deeper inside of them.
The inside is more important to Him than whether you’re tall or short, muscular or thin. You don’t need makeup and an “updo” to get His attention.
(Back to Jesse and the boys). When the “baby” of the family, David, came in from the fields, the Lord made it clear to Samuel that this was the next king. He wasn’t tall and handsome like his brothers. He was a cute kid that took being a shepherd seriously. God saw beyond the outward appearances and directly into this young shepherd’s heart. God knew he had the heart of a leader. Later on in scripture, he is referred to as a “man after Gods own heart”. What type of heart do you suppose that is?
This doesn’t mean that as David went through his life he never goofed up, because we know that’s not the case. He made some pretty intense failures. Those mistakes affected many people. I’m sure his failures haunted him at times. He sought forgiveness and God forgave. He went on to be a great leader with a heart to do right.
