Being Awkward

Have you ever been in a setting where you just weren’t comfortable being yourself? Maybe it was with a group of people that were much smarter than you. Maybe it was with people you wanted to impress with your brilliance. (Ha).

Maybe, just maybe, there are those that you could see yourself being friends with if you let your guard down long enough to be your awkward self and allow it. Making and keeping friends as adults can be tricky, but well worth the effort.

I think the biggest thing that holds us back is the “friends” we have had in our past. We may have been burned by those we trusted. The Bible does say there are those that don’t have our best interest at heart. We need to be cautious of that type of “friend”, but not to the point of never trying to develop close relationships.

We also see that good friends can be those that “keep us on our toes” in a really good way. That is the kind of friendship that passes the test of time. I’m sure there is a degree of awkwardness in the beginning of that type of relationship, but when we give it a go, we may just have a friend that’s gonna stick closer than a brother (or sister). If it takes being awkward, go for it.

Proverbs 27:17 NLT

[17] As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.

Proverbs 18:24 NLT

[24] There are "friends" who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.
