Many of you from Jackson, MO remember the blizzard of 1979. When we went to bed the meteorologist on the nightly news assured us that we would only get a slight dusting of snow. But, to our surprise, when we woke the next morning there was snow up to the top of our mailboxes by the road.
I was totally unprepared for that event. It was time to buy groceries, and my cupboards were basically empty. I had a two-year-old and a baby that didn’t care what it was doing outside, they needed their mommy to fix them something to eat. So thankful for one of my neighbors who called and offered our family some stew meat and some milk. Their daddy also had to walk in the snow to a little small store across a field to get those babies some oatmeal too.
In the parable that Jesus shared about the lamps and the oil, those that were unprepared were “up a creek”. When the time came and they desperately needed oil for their lamps, they were turned down for help; and it was too late to get to the market to buy some. It was too late.
Jesus was wanting us to understand that we need to be ready. Don’t be caught without having the most important thing in your life for your survival. Make sure that you have a relationship with Jesus and are ready for His return. Once that is settled, go about your life helping others know Jesus too.
“The marketplace is empty
No more traffic in the streets
All the builders' tools are silent
No more time to harvest wheat
Busy housewives cease their labors
In the courtroom no debate
Work on earth is all suspended
As the King comes through' the gate”
The King is coming…
After He comes, there will be complete chaos in the streets. Those that remain are left to fend for themselves.
Stay ready.
