A Giving Heart

It is cool to be recognized for doing something sweet for someone…especially when unexpected. But sometimes, there are those that will only do a “kind” deed if they can have the spotlight put on them. A couple of phrases keep popping up in my head, “All show and no substance!” And… “He/she sure talks a good game!”
May we all be more like the following story…
I read a story of a man who retired from an engineering job and decided to take a job as a night janitor of a local school. One day he was found dead in one of the hallways. His daughter was called, and she came home from the big city. When she planned the memorial, she had no clue there wouldn’t be room enough for all those that wanted to pay their respects.
You see, this kind man had secretly helped countless numbers of students at that school. He tutored, gave lunch money, gave coats, walked frightened students to their car…the list goes on. When they opened his locker to clean it out, what the found was nothing less than amazing. There were gift cards, clothes and shoes of different sizes, a variety of school supplies and much more.
This unassuming janitor had a heart for those students, and there were many that had benefited from his love and generosity. His memorial service was packed with those whom his kindness had touched in some way. He never did any of it for the glory. He did it out of a heart of love.
