Something About the Name

I don’t know if we do it so much now, but in the biblical days, the name given at birth meant something. I know that my birth name is Paula, which means “little”, (I haven’t lived up to so much over the years.) But I don’t think that mom and dad thought about the meaning, they just liked the name. So is true with most parents.

I’m sure some do think long and hard about the name their child will have to grow up with, and then there are others that should’ve thought a little harder.

The name that Mary was given by God to name her child was “Jesus”, which means “He will save people from their sins.” It is so much more. There’s healing in that name. There’s power in that name. There’s hope in that name. There’s strength in that name. There’s peace in that name. I could go on and on.

When I have trouble going to sleep at night, there is rest in that name. Instead of counting sheep, I begin to say His name and drift off to sleep to get the rest I need.

Jesus is available. Speak His powerful name over situations and see just how powerful it is. Peter didn’t have money to give to the lame beggar. He gave what he had…the powerful name of Jesus. Peter knew that was what this guy needed more than money…to be well.

Acts 3:6 NLT

[6] But Peter said, "I don't have any silver or gold for you. But I'll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!"
