Leave Things Better

The quote in today’s meme says so much. “Give back more than you take and leave things better than you find them.” I know it is wishful thinking, but what if everyone lived by that standard? There certainly would be no need for someone out by the highway in reflective clothing stabbing trash and putting in a trash bag.

Our parents always insisted that we pick up after ourselves. We may have been resistant at the time, but that one tiny thing we learned then, became huge in the scope of our life. Most of us didn’t become “hoarders”. What we became were people willing to pay attention to our surroundings and want some sort of order.

As Christians in a world of those that have no desire to be better people, it is incumbent upon us to have our lives in order. The way we live our lives should be glowing with the light of Jesus. We should be giving back more than we take every single day.

Our love for those around us should never be pretentious. It should come from a pure heart and wanting to leave them better than we found them.

We have the perfect example in Jesus. He left us so much better than He found us. We now have a hope where there was no hope. We have the light of His life found in the scriptures to guide us in doing good things. In this way we can become a light for others. We can forgive even when it is the hardest thing ever.

Matthew 5:16 NLT

[16] In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

Galatians 6:9-10 NLT

[9] So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up. [10] Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone.
