A father brought his son to Jesus to be healed from a demon that had possessed him since he was a little boy. The demon would toss him in the fire and into water trying to kill him. And the day that Jesus was coming by the demon caused him to have a violent convulsion.

The dad used a word that showed how strong (or in this case not strong) his faith was that day. He asked Jesus to have mercy on his son “if” you can. Wow! After all the miracles Jesus had been doing throughout that region, this dad still didn’t have a clue what was right there in front of his eyes.

Before we get too hard on the dad for saying “if”, how often have we said or implied the same thing in our own day to day lives? We claim sickness and disease as our own and say, “If it be thy will” Jesus heal me from this or that. It is never His will for us to carry sickness. His will is for us to be whole in every area of our life. But the devil is real, and we do get attacked with sickness and disease. This is where your belief in Gods perfect will has to be strong.

Today’s verse says ANYTHING is possible if a person believes. And the question is, “how much is left out of anything?”

Then the dad in today’s verse says something we should take to heart and pray as well. “Help me overcome my unbelief!” So many things in our lives could be made lighter through the light of faith…believing.

Mark 9:23-24 NLT

[23] "What do you mean, 'If I can'?" Jesus asked. "Anything is possible if a person believes." [24] The father instantly cried out, "I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!"
