Do This, Don't Do That

Do you remember the song, “Signs” from the 70’s? It was really a sort of rebellious song, but it helped me with my point today. The first verse…

“And the sign said

"Long-haired freaky people

Need not apply"

So I tucked my hair up under my hat

And I went in to ask him why

He said, "You look like a fine upstandin' young man

I think you'll do"

So I took off my hat and said, "Imagine that

Huh, me workin' for you"

Whoa”

It looked as if he had “obeyed the rules”. He was just pretending he had, when in reality underneath his dirty ole hat, was the same long-haired hippy…nothing had changed.

Whoa! Do ya see where I’m going here? I think you do. There are a lot of folks out here that live their lives from one rule to another. They’ve “read the signs” of “do this, don’t do that” and have followed them to the letter. Until they “remove their hat”, (so to speak) and we begin to see what is below the surface, do we start to get who they really are.

Life is more than just keeping rules. You can keep every religious rule out there and still not have a personal relationship with the Lord. You’ve got on your “religious; pompous; Sunday-go -to-meetin” hat, but you are hiding what’s really going on inside your heart. You’re dealing with spiritual issues that only a loving personal “one on one” relationship with Jesus can satisfy.

Colossians 2:23 NLT

[23] These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person's evil desires.
